'I Haven't Slept for Days': Iran's Mounting Desperation

Shadow of Regional Conflict Deepens Domestic Woes

TEHRAN, Iran – For a month, the escalating conflict in the Middle East has dominated global headlines, but its ripples extend far beyond the immediate battlegrounds. In Iran, a nation already grappling with severe economic hardship and social tensions, the regional turmoil has cast a long, suffocating shadow, pushing ordinary citizens to the brink of despair. From the bustling streets of Tehran to the historic bazaars of Isfahan, a pervasive sense of anxiety and hopelessness is taking root, as people describe a daily struggle intensified by the fear of wider war and a relentless squeeze on their livelihoods.

“I haven’t slept for days, truly,” laments Reza Ahmadi, a 45-year-old taxi driver in Tehran. “Every morning, I wake up to news of more fighting, more threats. It feels like we are on the edge of a precipice, and the ground beneath us is crumbling. How can I focus on earning enough for my family when the future feels so uncertain, so dangerous?” Ahmadi's words echo a sentiment heard across the country in early November 2023, as the Israel-Hamas conflict, which began on October 7, continued to escalate, drawing in regional actors and raising fears of a broader conflagration that could directly impact Iran.

Economic Despair Reaches New Heights

Even before the current regional crisis, Iran's economy was under immense pressure, crippled by international sanctions, rampant inflation, and endemic corruption. The past month, however, has seen these pressures intensify dramatically. The Iranian Rial has continued its precipitous decline against major currencies, further eroding purchasing power. Official inflation rates hover around 50%, but for essential goods, many Iranians report prices soaring far beyond that figure.

Fatemeh Karimi, a 30-year-old primary school teacher in Mashhad, struggles to feed her two young children. “A loaf of bread costs more, cooking oil is unaffordable, and even simple vegetables seem to double in price overnight,” she explains, her voice heavy with fatigue. “My salary barely covers rent and utilities. We are cutting back on everything – meat is a luxury, fresh fruit a distant memory. The war, even if not directly here, is draining us dry through the economy.” Small business owners are also feeling the pinch. Maryam Salimi, 55, who runs a small textile shop in Tabriz, notes a sharp drop in customer traffic and a struggle to restock her inventory. “Suppliers are hesitant, prices are unstable, and people simply have no disposable income. I fear I might have to close my doors soon.”

A Climate of Fear and Repression

Alongside economic pain, there is a palpable increase in the fear of state repression. The government, wary of any public dissent, appears to have tightened its grip. Reports of increased internet censorship, heightened surveillance, and arrests of activists have become more frequent. For many, the memory of the widespread protests following the death of Mahsa Amini in September 2022 is still fresh, and the authorities seem determined to prevent any resurgence of unrest fueled by the current economic and geopolitical anxieties.

Ali Hosseini, a 22-year-old university student in Isfahan, describes a chilling atmosphere. “You see more plainclothes security forces, online discussions are more guarded, and people are far more reluctant to speak openly, even among friends,” he says. “There’s a sense that any sign of discontent, any criticism, could be met with swift and severe consequences. The fear of being targeted for simply expressing frustration is very real.”

Voices from the Street: 'We Are Trapped'

The collective sentiment among many Iranians is one of being trapped between a rock and a hard place: the external threat of regional conflict and the internal pressures of economic collapse and political repression. “We are trapped,” reiterates Reza Ahmadi, the taxi driver. “Trapped by sanctions, trapped by our own government, and now trapped by a war that isn’t ours but affects us profoundly.”

This desperation is not merely anecdotal; it’s a widespread reality. The psychological toll of living under such intense, multifaceted pressure is immense. Many describe chronic stress, sleep deprivation, and a profound sense of powerlessness. As the regional conflict shows no signs of abating, and Iran’s domestic challenges continue to mount, the cries of desperation from its ordinary citizens serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of geopolitical instability, far beyond the headlines.
