Where the Sea Earns Its Own Soundtrack
Yeosu (여수) is a port city on Korea's southern tip in South Jeolla Province, hemmed in by the 317 islands of Hallyeohaesang National Marine Park. It is famous for three things that consistently surprise first-time visitors: ocean views dramatic enough to inspire a hit K-pop ballad, Korea's first marine cable car strung over open sea, and gejang — soy-marinated raw crab so good locals call it "the rice burglar." In summer, warm shallow water, boulder-perched cliff temples, and a breezy World Expo–era promenade make Yeosu the south coast escape that rewards both the day-tripper and the weekend wanderer.

Getting There from Seoul
| Method | One-way Time | Approx. Price (₩) | Key Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| KTX (high-speed train) | 2 h 50 min – 3 h | From approx. ₩28,600 (economy) | Departs Seoul Station; arrives Yeosu Expo Station right on the waterfront. Book at least a week ahead for July–August weekends — trains sell out. |
| Express Bus | 3 h 45 min – 4 h 30 min | From approx. ₩22,000 | Departs Seoul Express Bus Terminal (Gangnam) or Nambu Bus Terminal; drops at Yeosu Bus Terminal near downtown. Cheaper but slower, and seats fill on Friday evenings. |
| Car / Drive | 3 h 30 min – 4 h | Fuel + tolls approx. ₩45,000 – 55,000 | Via Namhae Expressway. Best option if you plan to explore Dolsan Island and Hyangiram Hermitage independently — public transport to these sites is limited. |
Recommendation: Take the KTX. You arrive in under three hours directly beside the harbour, walk to most downtown sights, and can rent a taxi or scooter for the Dolsan Island leg. Book via the KORAIL website (letskorail.com) or the Korail app.
A Perfect One Day in Yeosu
-
Odongdo Island — 8:30 AM · ~1.5 hours · Free (Dongbaek Train optional: ₩500)
Begin before the tour groups arrive on this lush island linked to the mainland by a 760 m stone causeway. Walk the breakwater freely (open 24 hours, no entrance fee) or ride the little Dongbaek tourist train (₩500 one-way, ~15 minutes) through a canopy of camellia trees to the lighthouse at the far end. The light in early morning is soft and the sea breeze keeps the summer heat honest.
10 min walk along the waterfront promenade to the next stop.
-
Yi Sun-sin Square & Jinnamgwan Hall — 10:00 AM · ~45 min · Free
The bronze statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin — Korea's greatest naval commander — stands watch over the main waterfront square. Behind him, Jinnamgwan Hall (built 1716) is the largest surviving single-story wooden building in Korea; it served as the command headquarters of the South Sea Fleet. Both the square and the hall are free to visit. This is also a good moment to grab a coffee at one of the cafés edging the square before tackling the cable car queue.
10 min walk to the cable car Jasan Station (hillside, signposted from the square).
-
Yeosu Maritime Cable Car — 11:15 AM · ~1 hour · ₩17,000 – ₩24,000
Korea's first marine cable car stretches 1.5 km over open sea between Jasan Park on the mainland and Dolsan Park on Dolsan Island. Standard cabin: ₩17,000 return for adults, ₩12,000 for children. Crystal-floor cabin (the floor is transparent glass): ₩24,000 return for adults. The crystal cabins add a genuine thrill — gazing straight down at the sea 86 m below. Arrive before noon; peak-summer queues can run 30–60 minutes and tickets are sold only at the booth on the day (no advance online booking).
25 min taxi from Dolsan Park to the next stop; confirm fare before departing (~₩8,000 – 12,000).
-
Hyangiram Hermitage — 1:00 PM · ~1.5 hours · ₩2,000
One of Korea's most arresting cliff temples, Hyangiram clings to a boulder outcrop at the far tip of Dolsan Island. Narrow stone passageways thread through the rock face — seven in total — before opening onto a terrace with a 180-degree view of the open Korea Strait. Nationally celebrated as a sunrise spot, the hermitage is equally beautiful in the afternoon when tour coaches have moved on. Admission: adults ₩2,000, teens ₩1,500, children ₩1,000. Open daily 4:00 AM – 7:00 PM.
20 min drive north to Manseongni Beach.
-
Manseongni Beach — 3:30 PM · ~1 hour · Free
Yeosu's most accessible beach is distinctive for its dark, fine-grained volcanic sand — a stark contrast to the pale beaches typical of Korea's west coast. In July the shallow water is warm and calm, making it a practical mid-afternoon swim stop. Changing facilities and outdoor showers are on site.
15 min drive back to downtown Yeosu for dinner, or taxi from the beach.
-
Dolsan Bridge Night View — 7:30 PM · ~30 min · Free
Yeosu's most iconic nocturnal image — the illuminated Dolsan Bridge arcing over the harbour — is best seen from the Jasan Park observation deck (the hillside above the cable car's Jasan Station). Walk back down to Yi Sun-sin Square afterward and join the Nangman Pocha tent-bar strip for dinner and soju with the harbour lights reflected in the water.

The Area in 60 Seconds
Yeosu occupies a rugged peninsula in South Jeolla Province where low mountains drop straight into the Korea Strait. The surrounding Hallyeohaesang National Marine Park — Korea's only coastal national park — shelters 317 islands, sea caves worn smooth by centuries of tidal action, and some of the clearest inshore water on the peninsula. Fishing and trade in salted and dried marine products shaped the local economy for centuries; today, petrochemical industry and tourism share the harbour in an unlikely but functional partnership.
The city's defining historical moment is the 1598 Battle of Noryang — the final engagement of the Imjin War, in which Admiral Yi Sun-sin won his last and fatal victory against the retreating Japanese fleet. The Jinnamgwan Hall (1716) survives as a monument to that legacy. Nearly four centuries later, Yeosu reintroduced itself to the world when it hosted the 2012 World Expo under the theme "The Living Ocean and Coast." The expo left behind the pedestrian promenade, public art installations, and cable car infrastructure that now define the city's modern waterfront identity.

Know Before You Go
- Book KTX tickets at least one week ahead in summer. Friday evening and Saturday morning departures sell out quickly in July and August. Buy on the KORAIL website (letskorail.com) or the Korail app; select "Yeosuexpo" as the destination, not "Yeosu."
- Cable car tickets: cash or card at the booth, no advance booking. Arrive before 10 AM or after 5 PM in peak season to avoid the longest queues. The cable car runs daily; check the official site (yeosucablecar.com) for seasonal hours before visiting.
- Hyangiram is an active place of worship. Dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees) and keep voices low inside the hermitage grounds. The rock passageways are narrow — not suitable for visitors with mobility difficulties.
- The Nangman Pocha waterfront opens at dusk. The strip of tented seafood-and-soju bars near Yi Sun-sin Square is Yeosu's most atmospheric evening experience — most stalls open around 6 PM and run until midnight or later. Fresh grilled oysters and grilled eel are the crowd favourites; prices are posted visibly at each stall.
