As of early March 2024, the average price of a litre of unleaded petrol climbed to approximately 150.31p, rising further to around 150.92p by the end of the month. This upward trajectory marks a stark contrast to the start of the year, when prices hovered closer to 140p. For families planning Easter getaways from March 29th to April 1st, this means a substantial increase in travel expenses, adding pressure to already stretched household budgets.
The Geopolitical Undercurrent: Why Prices Are Soaring
The primary catalyst for the current fuel price hike, according to industry analysts and consumer watchdogs like the RAC, is the persistent instability in the Middle East. Specifically, the Red Sea shipping disruptions, caused by Houthi attacks on commercial vessels, have forced many shipping companies to reroute their journeys around the Cape of Good Hope. This longer, more expensive route impacts the cost of transporting crude oil and refined fuel products globally.
Brent crude oil, the international benchmark, has consequently seen its price fluctuate, often hovering between $85 and $90 a barrel in recent weeks. While crude oil prices don't immediately translate to pump prices due to the refining and distribution process, sustained high wholesale costs inevitably trickle down to consumers.
